I approach teen therapy from a family systems perspective and foundational attachment principles that help teens obtain security in their relationship with their parents/caregivers in order to explore their inner-world. Teens have a developmentally appropriate need to have security in their relationship with their parents, as they launch to explore their inner world in relationship with their peers and the world around them.
Therefore, I meet with parents about once every few weeks to check in on progress and updates and answer questions they may have. I build a secure therapeutic relationship with the teen in order to explore what the problems presented are about. My modalities with teens depend on the issue at hand and their method of learning. I keep confidence in my sessions with teens, except for what is required of me by law to disclose or what the teen has agreed to disclose. I work very hard at bringing unity and safety in the family unit for the sake of the healing and growth of the family.
